Top 35 Most Affordable Corrections Schools

If you want to start a career in corrections, getting a degree is a smart move. Even though some correctional officer positions will not require that you have education past a high school diploma, an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in corrections, criminal justice, criminology, or a related field will be quite valuable to you as you begin your career in corrections. As you move up the career ladder, that degree will become even more valuable, potentially giving you eligibility for advanced and supervisory positions, and the opportunity to earn higher salaries.

Many aspiring corrections officers fear that they cannot afford to get a degree in corrections. The average cost of a bachelor’s degree as of the 2021-22 school year, per U.S. News and World Report, is $10,338 for public schools at the in-state resident rate; $22,698 for public schools at the out-of-state, non-resident rate; and $38,185 for private schools. That’s how much you’ll pay just for one year of education towards your degree!  Luckily, however, there are some much more affordable degree options for those pursuing a career in corrections.

How We Chose the Top 35 Most Affordable Corrections Schools

The corrections degree programs listed below have been chosen based on affordability. Each of these schools offers tuition (based on 2021-22 figures) that is among the lowest in its state. Where available, tuition rates are quotes for on campus and online tuition, at in-state and out-of-state rates.

Additionally, all of the schools listed below have received accreditation by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. This means that they have each been evaluated and found to be the highest quality corrections programs.

Although we did not find affordable corrections programs in all states, some states listed below do have more than one affordable corrections program offered that deserves recognition and is therefore a part of our list.

Flexible Education Options

Online corrections programs can offer the same quality of education as on campus corrections programs. With today’s technology, it is possible to host most, if not all, of a degree program’s classes in an online format. Some schools listed below feature degree programs that are offered completely online. Some are offered entirely in an on-campus format. Others are offered in a hybrid format, with some classes on campus and some online.

Internships Offered

Most of the corrections programs listed below either offer, on an optional basis, or require students to complete internships prior to graduation. This gives students the chance to gain real-world experience in the field and to know without a doubt, before graduation, that the corrections field is right for them.

Instructor Quality

The programs listed below typically have instructors who have worked, or are currently working, in the real world. They bring their unique criminal justice experience and perspectives to the classroom, making their teachings even more valuable to students.

Following, in alphabetical order by state, are 35 of the most affordable degrees in the corrections field.
